Vince Gironda Train 21 Rest 7

train 21 rest 7 day challenge

Train for 21 days and rest for 7 to go beyond the plateau

I must warn you, this tip is only for you if you’ve been through the trenches, have been working out regularly for over a year and your progress has stalled. You question why bother going to the gym and each workout seems like more effort than it’s worth. If you’re a beginner and look forward to every workout you may want to make a mental note of this tip and revisit when your enthusiasm weakens.

The picture is this, you’ve been at it month and after month, year after year, you built a physique most would be happy to have. You know all the exercises inside and out. You follow the routines others are getting great results from yet you fail to see results within yourself. Changing up your routine helps for a day or two then it all goes back to the same old.

Vince Gironda was very familiar with this scenario and so am I. Most trainees tend to get down on themselves for failing to make gains and would rather “whip themselves” into shape by adding more volume or increasing intensity. This is another area I wholeheartedly agree with Vince and the results speak for themselves. Instead of doing more, doing less results in continuous gains.

When “staleness” hits, it’s mainly the over taxing of nerves. They quit responding which ends progress. Rest is the best and only way to regenerate your nerves.

Vince’s suggestion, which has worked wonders for my clients and me as well, is to train with full concentration for 3 weeks, then taking a full week off from working out completely. No light weights and high reps, or a short jog or bike ride, nothing! Let your nerves regenerate and feel renewed with energy. Allow your muscles to soften up slightly and let your mind crave the gym once again.

If you feel you’re in a slump, or feel you’re stale right now, I would suggest you immediately take a week off and start the 3 weeks of concentrated training afterwards.

Again, I repeat, this is for you only if you’ve been training for an extended period of time without a break. This will backfire on you if you have recently (less than a year ago) picked up training or if you’ve only been training off and on.

Rest is nature’s way of restoring your nerves and muscles. Listen to it and reap the benefits.

Can you recall a time when you’ve taken time off from working out and made gains WITHOUT working out?
